The warm shower or "warm back" is a method that allows your employees to feel - well, "showered". You can find out exactly how it works in this article.
People are social beings. Basically, we all want the same thing: We want our strengths and successes to be seen, recognized and appreciated by others. A sincere compliment now and then, a little attention - that makes us happy and not only allows us to go through our daily lives with more enthusiasm, but also to work with greater motivation.
It's easy for us to say "thank you" when someone has done something for us. This is pure politeness, which of course should not be lacking on the job. But to express genuine appreciation, something more is needed. The warm shower is ideal for this.
This method is not just about thanking a team member for their achievements. It is also about recognizing their qualities and strengths. After all, the success of not only the team but also the entire company is built on these qualities and strengths. This can be special commitment, outstanding team qualities or simply the ability to listen really well when a colleague needs a sympathetic ear.
The team gathers in the meeting room - in the office or virtually in front of the screen. One team member sits down on a chair with his or her back facing the group, so that no eye contact can be established. Why? For one or the other "showering" person it can be uncomfortable to sit in the center of attention. In addition, the other team members can often speak more freely if the gazes do not meet.
Then it starts: In turn, each team member reports what they like about the "showering" person. Where could they support well, what is particularly fun with them, why is it good to work with them, etc.? Each team member is allowed to report openly, without the others commenting on it in their contribution.
However, it is important that only positive qualities are addressed - but authentically! Ingratiation or obvious exaggerations make no sense in the hot shower.
Variation: The participants support each other by writing positive feedback on each other's backs.
The person on the chair listens without saying anything, just enjoying the shower of warm words.
Admittedly: No one will feel fresher after this shower than before, but they will feel honestly appreciated. Thanks to the direct, authentic recognition of their own performance and personal skills, the "showered" person will walk out of the meeting room feeling two heads taller. So much praise and recognition is simply good for you and shows that you are exactly right in this team. This makes performance fun - when it is seen and appreciated. Just try it out at your next team meeting or as a team-building activity!
